Reflection 2

After learning about the 7 Catholic social teachings we were asked to pick two objects that would most accurately depict one of these teachings. As you might've seen, my selections consist of two objects that may seem meaningless or too simple, nonetheless, both of these objects testify to the life of two Saints that attributed to humanity through the establishment of a moral code of faith that still transcends to this day. Everywhere we turned we could see religious products, such as rosaries, mini statues of St. Francis, images of St. Clare and a lot clothing as well. But out of all of those products what attracted me to take pictures of these two objects in specific, is because their simplicity resembles that of the people whose life they testify. The piece of wood from the first picture is particularly my favorite because when looking at it for the first time it might be hard to figure out what it exactly is. However, if you look closely, this wooden piece has the shape of the Virgin Mary, but it is not just a small statue that serves an ornament. In fact, it is an object used for prayer. Back in her days, St. Clare would use a wooden object like this one to pray to Mary and after people saw her wooden piece, they were able to see that it actually resembled the shape of the Virgin Mary. Thus, after some time passed, the inhabitants began to use wooden pieces like the one St. Clare used to pray to Mary. Therefore, this object not only signifies or the Virgin Mary, but it also alludes to St. Clare's divine life. The second object is a small wooden ornament of St. Francis. I really liked this one as well because of its friendly and boy-shingly interesting shape. Just like the last object, this one also has a way deeper meaning behind its simple nature, that being making a direct testament to St. Francis' holy life and legacy. From my perspective, both of these objects would definitely be seen as positive by church leaders because they are instruments that can be used to enlarge both the religion's popularity and the faith of those who already belong to it.

Just like the objects that were previously described, this fresco also reinforces the image and divinity of the persona or saint its depicting, that being St. Francis. This fresco spoke to me mainly because it demonstrates St. Francis' holiness in midst of a rather dreadful event. As you can see, St. Francis is praying for this event to stop while small devilish looking creatures are flying in the skies. From my perspective this signifies St. Francis' unwillingness to commit violent actions and want to make a last long peaceful impact in both of the parties involved in this explicit altercation.
